Sitting here when I should be asleep, having been woken up by the thunder of the night. I took a few moments to reflect on some old works, statements, and quotes I have copied from various books throughout the last couple years of study. This one piece by Donald Michael Craig, taken from page 81 of his book Modern Magick has stuck with me the longest of all statements.
Have you ever heard of a “Sunday Morning Christian?” A Sunday Morning Christian is a person who
goes to church every Sunday (to be seen), sings very loudly (to be heard) and
puts large bills in the collection plate.
Then, in business, he does everything possible to steal and cheat. He lies about his friends and enemies and he
cheats on his wife. Yes, he puts on a
big show of being a Christian for a few hours every Sunday, but when it comes
to living every minute of the day after the manner of Jesus, he fails
miserably.
So what does this have to do with Ceremonial Magick? Like Sunday Morning Christians who think that
Christianity is something you do once a week, most people think that magick is
something you do. This is totally wrong.
Magick is not something that you do. Magick is something that you are!
To really be a magician means that your “mindset” is totally
centered around magick. This means that
no matter what you are doing, thinking or saying, there is always in your mind
that idea of how everything is related magickally. Thus, if you are talking
politics, you might be thinking about how a politician is able to convince
people to vote for him or her without ever mentioning a political platform. Certainly, this is a powerful form of magic;
convincing people to do things for no apparent reason. When you are cooking, you might be thinking
about how the element of fire affects meats, their by-products, and
vegetables. When magick becomes your way
of thinking, acting and breathing, then you will be a magician.
Please when you read this, if you are Christian, please do not get upset, I am not cataloging everyone into one category, nor am I putting any one particular person down. We have all seen these people across the board and it isn't just Christians, there are Pagans like this too. They come to ritual, sit/stand there, do not put forth any energy, go through the motions and go home. They think they participated but were only an observer and didn't really gain ground in their beliefs or put forth an effort to connect with their deities. This is such a shame because this is a fantastic opportunity to reach out to the divine and REALLY thank them for what they have done in your life. If nothing else, your awake and capable of reading this so you are educated and have some sort of resources to connect to others and research on the internet. Why miss opportunities time and time again, step forward, hold up those hands and praise the divine that has moved you into the right places in your life, also praise them for the difficult times in your life because that means they care enough to try and move you in the right direction by heating up your current position. Now get out there and show them some love!
Bright Blessings,
Anna
